| Ad Astra is a beautifully renovated Queen Victorian home built in 1871. In 2004, the entire house was physically moved to it's current location at 1033 Kentucky in Lawrence, KS to avert being torn down and was opened as a student cooperative.

Ad Astra is a great, cost-effective way to live that's within walking distance of KU. The house was saved from demolition in the autumn
of 2003 and moved to its current location by UKSHA which owns two other cooperatives in Lawrence.
After building in a well-insulated basement floor and remodeling much of the interior, Ad Astra opened in the fall of 2005
Ad Astra has no system by which a member earns points for completing projects and weekly chores as proof of their cooperation.
We feel that such a system goes against the ideals of true cooperation. As such, we are seeking self-motivated, cooperative
housemates who are willing to build consensus in house decisions and contribute to its ideals of environmental sustainability. In this spirit, Ad Astra:
- Buys food in bulk to save money and packaging
- Recycles everything possible and properly disposes of items like electronics and batteries
- Uses rain barrels to capture runoff water for gardening and other uses
- Maintains a year-round compost
- Weatherizes windows and doors during the winter to keep heating costs down
- Supports student and political organizations with sustainable agendas like KU Environs, Emerging Green Builders, and the Great Plains Alliance for Clean Energy

House Meal - March 2009
|
|
House meals are one of the more fun and advantageous aspects of the Ad Astra lifestyle. When everyone pitches in,
it's easy to make delicious homemade meals, enjoy them together, and take care of the dishes afterwards. =)
|
Each member in the House has a different house position. One of the positions is the "Recycler", who makes sure the recycling gets
taken care of each week and non-disposable items, such as batteries, get disposed of properly.
Other positions in the house include the gardner, the bulk food buyer, and the membership coordinator. It's amazing how nice
a household can run (even a big one like ours!) when everyone contributes their part.
View all 10 house positions with full descriptions in the Ad Astra Manifesto.
