Ad Astra is a beautifully renovated Queen Victorian home built in 1871. In 2004, the entire house was physically moved to it's current location at 1033 Kentucky in Lawrence, KS to avert being torn down and was opened as a student cooperative.

The following is a list of questions we get asked often. If you have questions not seen here, contact us.

How many rooms/people live in Ad Astra?
We have ten lovely rooms. Our goal is generally to be at capacity.
How much is rent? Utilities included? Internet, laundry included?
Some rooms have slightly different rents, but the average is $325 which includes all utilities and internet. The house does have a washer and dryer (free baby!)
What are Ad Astra's amenities and benefits?
Bottom line, we have a huge sweet house. Come check it out, we'll give you a tour.
Do you have a meal plan at Ad Astra?
We have a House bulk food plan where we each pitch in $15 a month and the House purchases bulk quantities of many things like flour, pasta, and peanut butter each month.
What else does Ad Astra do to save money?
Couple examples: we weatherize the windows in the winter to keep heat in. we've got rain barrels capturing rain water we can use on our lawn and gardens, etc. New ideas are always welcome and House members are free to persue any projects to increase energy or resource efficiency in the House.
Do you have to be a KU student to live there?
Being a student is strongly encouraged, but it doesn't specifically have to be the University of Kansas.
Do you have jobs/chores assigned each week?
Yup, 1 chore a week. We rotate through all chores. Everyone agrees to fulfill this responsibility when they sign their lease and the Ad Astra Manifesto.
How long has Ad Astra been a cooperative?
Ad Astra was renovated and opened in 2005.
What aspects of Ad Astra do you think draw future applicants to the house?
People are becoming increasingly aware of the need to be environmentally conscious - one of Ad Astra's primary goals. Also, a cooperative is a great college atmosphere (especially when all members are students).
How does the application process work? Do you interview?
Yes. When a room opens up in the house, we interview applicants who have submitted applications until an applicant is selected by consensus of all house members.
Do you have a landlord? Or do you guys own the house? Who collects the rent, basically?
A Lawrence non-profit owns all three co-ops in Lawrence, Sunflower, Olive House, and Ad Astra. We send a payment to them each month but run all our own financies and house affairs otherwise.
